COMSOL Multiphysics is a finite element analysis, solver and Simulation software / FEA Software package for various physics and engineering applications, especially coupled phenomena, or multiphysics. COMSOL Multiphysics also offers an extensive interface to MATLAB and its toolboxes for a large variety of programming, preprocessing and postprocessing possibilities. The packages are cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux). In addition to conventional physics-based user interfaces, COMSOL Multiphysics also allows for entering coupled systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). The PDEs can be entered directly or using the so-called weak form (see finite element method for a description of weak formulation). An early version (before 2005) of COMSOL Multiphysics was called FEMLAB.

Installation of COMSOL Multiphysics on a Mac OS X PC
- Download the COMSOL package: Comsol 5.5
- Connect to engineering VPN
- Mount the Comsol55.iso package and navigate to the mounted location.
- Open the ‘setup’ file to start the installation. If the install does not start check to see if your macOS version is compatible OR if you need to provide admin access (steps on how to allow access for Comsol are located at end of page)
- The COMSOL 5.5 installer will open, select your language, and click Next.
- Select ‘New COMSOL 5.5 Installation’.
- Accept the license agreement.
Change License Format to <port number>@<host name>
Enter for the Port number: 1718
Enter for the Hostname: comsol.engr.ucr.edu
then click Next. - Check to make sure all settings are correct and continue to click Next.
- Once you are ready, click Install, which will proceed through the installation.
- To run COMSOL, make sure you are connected to engineering VPN and then run the program like you normally would.
NOTE: You can download the previous versions if needed.
NOTE: You may need to allow administrative access to the program. - CMD + space Type “Security and Privacy” -> General [tab]
- Click the lock to allow admin/sudo access. Select “Allow apps downloaded from App Store and identified developers.” Allow the software to run as shown in the screenshot
Patch for Users Using Mac OS X Yosemite
If you are having issues installing or running COMSOL Multiphysics, and you are running Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.x), a patch has been released to resolve this issue:
This update corrects a few bugs and stability issues in Version 5.1 of COMSOL Multiphysics, COMSOL Server, and COMSOL Client. It also makes it possible to run COMSOL 5.1 on Windows® 10.
If you are already running Windows 10 or have updated to Windows 10, you must apply the COMSOL 5.1 Hotfix for Windows® 10 in additionto applying this update.If you make a complete installation of COMSOL 5.1 using the latest download (includes the contents of Update 3), the Hotfix is not needed. This applies both if you already have installed Windows 10 or plan to update later on.
The update is cumulative; that is, it applies to Version 5.1, Version 5.1 Update 1, and Version 5.1 Update 2, and it includes all updates from the previous Update 1 and Update 2.

Updating COMSOL Multiphysics
1Check your version
Make sure that you run COMSOL version 5.1.0.136 or later. Start COMSOL, and check the version in the Messages window. Be sure to close all COMSOL® sessions before installing the update.
2Download Update
In some browsers, such as Internet Explorer, you get a dialog box where you can click Run directly after download. Before clicking Run, make sure again that you have closed all COMSOL sessions. In other browsers, such as Chrome, you have to select the downloaded file and run it, see step 3 below.

Install

Updating COMSOL Server

Make sure that you run COMSOL version 5.1.0.136 or later. Open

Starting COMSOL as a service (Windows® only)
If you have installed COMSOL Server as a Windows® service, make sure to start this service after installation. You can start the COMSOL service using the following procedure:

- Right-click the COMSOL service and select Start.
Updating COMSOL Client
To update COMSOL Client to version 5.1.0.234, just uninstall COMSOL Client and then download the new version from www.comsol.de/client-download/5.1.0.234 and reinstall.
Your installation of COMSOL Client must have the same version number as the COMSOL Server you connect to.

Chemical Reaction Engineering Module
- In the Reaction Engineering and Chemistry interfaces, the input fields for molar masses and electric charge were removed for the cases when they are not needed.
